The Unmoored Messenger's Gambit

Joric darted across the narrow maintenance ledge, his worn boots finding purchase on the slick metal. Below him, the city’s lights twinkled like trapped stars, far from the welcoming glow of the surface. A tremor, sudden and violent, ripped through the city's infrastructure.

A vital diagnostic tool, its anchor bolt sheared clean, began its slow, inexorable drift towards the upward abyss. Chain Guard Heng, his face a mask of grim determination, lunged, his own anchor chain straining. But he was too far. Joric, however, was already moving. He didn't cling; he flowed.

His innate resistance to the Pull slowed the tool’s ascent, giving him a precious window. He launched himself, not with desperation, but with a practiced, reckless grace, snagging the drifting device with a forearm. "Spare part for your collection, Heng?"

Joric called back, his voice laced with a dark humor that was almost lost in the wind's shriek. He secured the tool to his belt, the metal feeling alien and impossibly light against his skin, a familiar precursor to the disorienting lightness that always followed such an exertion.

Heng watched, his jaw tight, a storm of resentment and reluctant awe warring in his eyes. Joric, for his part, just grinned, already eyeing the next precarious crossing. This city held its breath, but he could dance in the exhale.
