Reflection's Anchor and the Council's Snare
The Sky's End Anchor, weakened by Council sabotage and Reflection's memory loss, surged upwards, pulling the city with it.
Reflection’s hands, usually unsteady from the constant drain of her powers, were surprisingly still as she traced the hairline fracture on the Sky's End Anchor. It pulsed with a sickly blue light, a dying heartbeat in the belly of the Upside-Down City.
The city itself groaned above her, a symphony of stressed metal and groaning chains, each tremor a reminder of the precarious balance holding them from the eternal fall into the sky.
“It’s weakening,” Tiechui’s voice echoed in her mind, a phantom limb of memory. He had poured his essence into this Anchor, a desperate gambit to save them all, and she, Reflection, was its keeper, its conduit. But each surge of the Anchor’s power, each application of the ‘pull’ that Zero had glimpsed, stole another piece of her. “The Council…
they found a weak point. A counter-resonance.”
She touched the fracture. It felt like a nerve ending, raw and exposed. The Council, desperate to reclaim control, were seeding the Anchor with a ‘downward pull,’ a perversion of Zero’s discovery, meant to drag them not just down, but into oblivion.
Heng, bless his rage-filled heart, had been fighting a losing battle on the city’s periphery, trying to stem the Council’s physical sabotage. But this… this was deeper.
“No,” she murmured, the word catching in her throat. She could feel Tiechui’s will within the Anchor, fighting against the foreign invasion. He was the anchor, and she was the hand that guided its grip. But her own memories were unraveling like cheap rope. Just this morning, she had forgotten how to make tea.
The thought was a sharp, sudden pang, like a physical ache. She looked at her hands, the hands that were supposed to hold the city aloft, and saw only the tremor that threatened to betray her.
Heng’s frantic voice crackled over the comms, distorted by the Anchor’s immense energy. “Reflection! They’re breaching sector gamma! They have… gas!”
Reflection shook her head, a desperate attempt to clear the fog. Gas. Not a bomb, not a disruptor. Something more insidious, something that would exploit the weakened Anchor. The Council wouldn’t risk destroying it outright if they couldn’t control it. They wanted to *reclaim* it, to steer it into their own dark designs.
And they knew her weakness. They knew about the memory loss.
“Heng, I can’t… I can’t fight them directly. My… my grip is slipping.” The confession was a whisper, swallowed by the hum of the Anchor. She saw a flash of Zero’s face, serene and distant, then the image dissolved, replaced by the cold, calculating eyes of a Council agent. The signal… Zero’s signal.
It had spoken of an anchor at the end of the sky, a place where gravity itself was rewritten. Tiechui had believed it, built this Anchor based on it. And now, the Council was trying to twist that very hope into a weapon.
She felt it then – a subtle shift, a discordant vibration deep within the Anchor’s core. The Council’s agents had reached the primary conduit chamber. They were about to inject their poison. There was only one way to counteract the ‘downward pull’ now – to amplify the ‘pull’ force, to push it beyond its current limits. It would cost her. Dearly.
“Heng, tell them… tell them I’m sorry,” she said, her voice suddenly calm, resigned. She closed her eyes, focusing on the thrum of Tiechui’s essence, on the faint whisper of Zero’s original signal. She felt the familiar tug at her memories, a tearing sensation, but this time it was an ocean, not a trickle.
Faces, names, places – all being ripped away, dissolving into the sky above. She pushed, channeling the Anchor’s surging energy, channeling her own fading self into the heart of the machine. The sickly blue light intensified, then flared to an almost blinding white.
The city above let out a collective, terrified gasp as it lurched violently upwards.
“No! Reflection!” Heng’s voice was a distant roar, cut short. The comms went dead. The Anchor shuddered, a violent tremor that threatened to tear it apart. But the ‘downward pull’ receded, replaced by an overwhelming surge of upward momentum. She had bought them time, perhaps, but at a price she could no longer comprehend.
She looked at her hands, no longer recognizing the intricate weave of scars and calluses that spoke of a life lived, of a craft mastered. Who was this woman? What was this place?
She stumbled back, the Anchor’s immense power resonating through her. The fracture was still there, but now it pulsed with the same pure white light as the Anchor itself. The Council’s poison had been purged, but the cost… the cost was her very self.
She could feel the city above, a living entity suspended by her will, by Tiechui’s sacrifice, by Zero’s impossible signal. But who was she to these people? A guardian? A ghost? A forgotten tool?
Reflection’s hand, impossibly steady, reached for the exposed conduit, and with a strangled cry that was not her own, she activated the downward pull.
Canon Update
- →The "Anchor of the Sky's End" is no longer just a city stabilizer, but possesses the ability to actively guide the city's trajectory, and this trajectory is pointing towards an unknown abyss.
- →Reflection's memories and self-awareness are almost completely lost, but her connection with the "Anchor of the Sky's End" has become closer due to "Submergence Resonance", making her the "navigator" of the anchor.
- →The city is "sinking" into the abyss at an irreversible speed, and for the Council, this provides a new, more destructive opportunity for manipulation.
