Heng's Final Anchor Chain Severed
The Sky's End Anchor's stillness became a reversal, propelling the unmoored city upwards into the abyss.
Heng slammed his fist against the console, sparks spitting from the conduit. "Blast it all!" he roared, the psychic feedback from the failing anchor system a physical pain in his skull. He was losing his grip, just like the city was losing its hold.
The primary anchor chain, the one forged from Tiechui's very essence, was visibly fraying, its once-impenetrable links now shimmering with an unnatural stillness that preceded dissolution. His own tether, a vital connection to the city's core, had already disintegrated, leaving him precariously unmoored and fighting a battle he was already losing.
He had to find Reflection. Her connection to the Pull Force was the only thing that had ever stabilized the Sky's End Anchor. But her memories were the price, and the Council’s machinations, however subtle now, were constant.
He imagined them, hidden in their shadow warrens, watching his pain, relishing the chaos as the city drifted ever closer to the edge of true stillness.
His comm crackled. "Officer Heng? Report! The tremors are increasing. Secondary anchors are reporting slippage."
"I see it, soldier," Heng muttered, his voice tight. "Just… hold your anchor points. Whatever you do, hold on."
He glanced at a dangling tool kit, its contents meticulously organized, a stark contrast to the disintegrating reality around him. Seven tools. If one slipped… he’d have six. He learned not to think about the six-times. Now, even the idea of holding on felt like a cruel joke when the very chains binding them were being unmade.
His gaze drifted to the window, to the vast, terrifying expanse of the upward abyss. He saw it then – a faint, pulsing light far beyond the visible city limits, the source of Zero's signal. Was that the end of the sky? Or just another lure, another deception designed to unravel them completely?
The Council’s Sky-Fall Plan always spoke of a new world, a safe harbor. But the stillness Zero offered, the stillness Reflection now embodied, felt like an ending, not a beginning.
Heng reached for a heavy wrench, its weight a familiar comfort. He needed something solid, something real. He thought of Tiechui, the anchor-smith, who had given everything for this city, for this impossible anchor. This disintegration, this betrayal of his legacy, was a torment amplified by Heng’s own failing connection.
He wouldn't let Tiechui's sacrifice be in vain, not while a single link held.
He moved towards the observation deck, the city groaning around him. Each shudder of the structure sent jolts of agony through him, the city's pain becoming his own. He saw Reflection standing near the main anchor point, her form shimmering, not with exhaustion, but with a strange, serene detachment.
Her eyes, once vibrant, held only the reflection of the upward abyss.
"Reflection!" Heng bellowed, his voice echoing in the cavernous space. "We need you. The anchor is failing!"
She turned, a faint smile gracing her lips. "Failing? Or releasing, Heng?" Her voice was distant, a whisper against the city's groans. "It is not failing. It is returning."
"Returning where?" Heng demanded, taking a step closer. "To nothingness? We can fight this! We have to!"
"Fight what?" Reflection asked, tilting her head. "The Pull? The inevitable descent? It is a mercy, Heng. A release from the burden of holding on."
"Mercy?" Heng scoffed, the word tasting like ash. "Look around you! This is not mercy. This is obliteration! Tiechui didn't die for this!"
Reflection’s smile didn’t waver. "Tiechui understood the stillness. He understood release. You cling to the cage, Heng, even as its bars dissolve."
Suddenly, a section of the main anchor chain, where Reflection had focused her Pull Force moments before, pulsed violently. A wave of unmaking washed over it, and the metal seemed to disintegrate, not into debris, but into pure, empty space.
A hole opened, a tear in the city's fabric, sucking in loose rivets and stray debris with an insatiable hunger.
"No!" Heng cried out, staggering as his own connection to the city’s system went violently discordant. His psychic pain surged, threatening to unmoor him entirely. He watched, horrified, as the anchor chain, his city’s lifeline, its very reason for existence, began to buckle and stretch, succumbing to the immense upward pull. It was accelerating.
The Anchor’s Eye, the corrupted heart of the Sky's End Anchor, was devouring itself, and with it, them.
Heng gripped the console, his knuckles white. He saw it – the last visible fragment of the main anchor chain, the one bearing the marks of Tiechui’s artistry, buckling under the strain. It wasn't merely slipping; it was being pulled free.
With a soundless scream, the metal tore itself from its moorings, a final, agonizing surrender to the upward abyss. Hope, for now, was gone, pulled into the endless sky.
The last visible fragment of the main anchor chain buckled, snapping free, and began its inevitable ascent into the upward abyss, taking with it the last vestiges of the city's hope.
