Heng's Echo and the Anchor's Plunge
Reflection sacrificed her consciousness into the Anchor to redirect the Council's downward pull, causing the city to descend.
Heng gripped the console, knuckles white against the chipped durasteel. "Report!" he barked, his voice a controlled growl despite the tremor in his hands. "What is the Anchor's status?" A nervous technician stammered, "Officer, the resonance... it's gone. The 'pull' signal is gone!"
Heng's gut twisted. Gone. Zero's signal, the very thing that had given the Sky's End Anchor purpose, the hope for ascent, had vanished. This was no random failure; the Council's touch was too subtle, too precise. They'd been preparing for this, for the moment the Anchor became vulnerable.
He saw it then – Reflection, her fragmented consciousness the only thing truly holding the colossal mechanism together, was also its greatest weakness. "Where is she?" he demanded.
The technician flinched. "We… we can't locate her, sir. Not since the last surge. It's like she was… absorbed."
Absorbed. The word hung in the air, heavy with dread. He knew what that meant. Reflection, in her desperate attempt to counter the Council's sabotage, had poured herself entirely into the Anchor. Her memories, her very self, were now inextricably bound to the metal and void.
He could feel the Anchor's instability through his own connection, a dull throb in his bones that mirrored the city's precarious hold.
"They've done it," Heng muttered, the self-recrimination bitter on his tongue. "The Council. They’ve corrupted Zero’s signal, forced the Anchor to break its connection."
He scrambled from the control room, ignoring the panicked shouts behind him. He had to reach the Anchor core. He had to see for himself, and if Reflection was truly gone, then his duty was clear: to ensure her sacrifice wasn't in vain.
He navigated the echoing corridors, the familiar clatter of upward-falling debris now sounding like a death knell. The city was designed for ascent, for escape; a descent, especially this uncontrolled plunge, was a death sentence.
He found her, or what remained of her, at the heart of the Anchor. It wasn't a physical presence, but a shimmering, fractured light pulsating within the core mechanism. The 'pull' signal from Zero was indeed gone, replaced by a chaotic, grinding noise that Heng recognized as the Council's 'downward resonance,' amplified to destructive levels.
Reflection’s essence, a ghostly echo of her former self, fought against it, stretching thin, her spectral form flickering with each wrenching lurch of the city.
"Reflection!" Heng shouted, his voice swallowed by the cacophony. He could feel her pain, her fading will. He extended a hand, but it passed through her spectral form. "You have to hold on! We have to realign the Anchor!"
A flicker of recognition, a ghostly smile. Her voice, faint and distorted, echoed not from her lips, but from the very core of the Anchor. "Heng… the signal… broken… memory… gone… so cold…"
He understood. The Council hadn't just corrupted the signal; they had severed it. And in doing so, they had shattered Reflection's tenuous hold on the Anchor. Her fragmented consciousness was now prey to the Anchor's inherent instability and the Council’s destructive influence.
Heng looked at the control panel, then back at the dying light of Reflection. There was no escaping the truth: the Anchor was failing, and with it, the city. He could try to override the Council's directive, but without Zero's signal to guide the ascent, it would likely only accelerate their fall.
His own connection to the chain system was strained, the city's turmoil tearing at him.
But a memory, sharp and painful, pierced through his despair. Tiechui's final words, echoing in his mind: "The Anchor itself… a new beginning… if the signal is found again…"
Zero's signal. It was gone, but perhaps not irrevocably. If he could somehow find a way to re-establish that connection, to reawaken the Anchor's true purpose…
He made his choice. Ignoring the increasingly violent lurches of the city, Heng threw himself towards the main console. He bypassed the Council's override systems, rerouting all available power, not to fight the descent, but to broadcast a desperate, untargeted signal into the upward abyss. A beacon, a plea, a desperate gamble.
"Zero!" he yelled, his voice cracking with exertion. "Zero, can you hear me? We need you! The city… we're falling!"
He poured his own desperate hope into the broadcast, his thirty years of guarding this city, his promise to Zero, his memory of Reflection's sacrifice, all of it channeled into the single, desperate transmission. The Anchor groaned, protesting the sudden influx of raw, unfocused energy.
The city lurched, not with the familiar upward surge, but a sickening, uncontrolled plunge. From the gaping maw of the Sky's End Anchor, a single, distorted voice shrieked, 'We're falling… into the sky!'
