He could almost hear the distant, mocking echo of Zero's signal, the catalyst for this descent into chaos.

His comm crackled. "Officer Heng, Section Gamma reports a structural anomaly near the auxiliary spire. Something's… loosening."

Heng slammed his fist against the bulkhead, a useless gesture of defiance. "Loosening is a polite word for 'about to be lost forever.' On my way. Keep the lines secure, damn it. Keep them holding."

He navigated the inverted city's dizzying walkways, the upward abyss a constant, terrifying presence on all sides. Debris, ripped from the city's underbelly, arced into the sky like fallen stars. Each upward drift was a reminder of what was at stake, what was already gone.

The Council's agents were nowhere in sight, but Heng knew their tendrils reached deep. They wanted the city to 'land,' to fall into whatever oblivion Zero promised. They saw his pain, his struggle to keep the anchor stable, as weakness. They were wrong.

"Get me the heaviest plating you have. And a hydro-spanner. Now!" Heng barked. He scanned the rapidly degrading mooring point. The rivets were groaning, the metal groaning in protest against the unnatural stress. He had to re-secure it, reinforce it, buy them more time.

But his connection to the main anchor was weakening with every tremor; his own strength was fading.

He saw it then, a glint of metal against the deep blue sky, a section of the secondary anchor chain itself, frayed and weakened by the Anchor's Eye's insidious reorientation. It was already coming loose, an independent casualty of the Anchor's Eye's capricious manipulation.

"No!" The technician's cry was lost as the secondary chain began to detach. It didn't snap with a violent crack; instead, it groaned, a long, drawn-out shriek of tortured metal, and then began to drift upwards, a serpentine ribbon following the path of its primary. Another lifeline, vanishing into the sky.

Heng watched it go, a cold dread settling in his gut. This was no longer about holding on; it was about an enemy actively severing their ties, one by one, guiding them all towards the ultimate release.

"Chain Guard Heng," he muttered to himself, the words a grim litany against the encroaching despair. "Your duty is to hold. And yet, everything is falling into sky."
